SPRINGFIELD — According to Forbes, 30% of teachers are concerned about job displacement by artificial intelligence in schools. A bill sponsored by State Senator Mike Porfirio and State Representative Abdelnasser Rashid would protect the jobs of Illinois teachers from being taken by AI.
“Illinois teachers are invaluable to our communities and to our students,” said Porfirio (D-Lyons Township). “This legislation upholds our commitment to our teachers and protects them from being replaced by advancing technology.”
House Bill 1859 would prevent public community colleges from using artificial intelligence as the sole source of instruction for a community college course. Currently, 50% of teachers use AI-powered educational games, and over 40% use tools like automated grading systems. The measure, while preventing AI from taking the role of a teacher, cements that the use of AI by instructors to augment and enhance coursework is permitted.
"Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool that can enhance both students' and teachers' capability to learn and teach, but it cannot replace an instructor," said Rashid (D-Bridgeview). "This legislation clarifies that college courses must be taught by real people, not AI."
House Bill 1859 passed the Senate on Thursday with bipartisan support.
