SPRINGFIELD — In honor of the victory and service of those in the United States Navy during the Battle of Midway, State Senator Mike Porfirio sponsored a resolution in the Illinois Senate to name June 7, 2025 as the Battle of Midway Day.
“This June, we honor the 83rd anniversary of the Battle of Midway,” said Porfirio (D-Lyons Township). “We remember those who served and sacrificed during the Battle of Midway and recognize the historic feat of our navy.”
The Battle of Midway lasted from June 4 to June 7 in 1942 and is one of the most significant, memorable naval battles in World War II. It marked the end of Japanese plans for invasion in the Pacific, a significant turning point in the war. The Midway Islands held an important strategic position in the war, as they are almost directly between the United States and Japan. Over 300 Americans lost their life in the battle, with many other casualties.
The Midway Atoll remains a U.S. territory. Porfirio’s district is home to Midway Airport, named in 1949 in honor of the battle.
The Senate adopted Senate Resolution 11 on Saturday, May 31.
