“As a member of this advisory council, I’m honored to collaborate with dedicated people to confront the national emergency of veteran suicide,” said Porfirio (D-Lyons Township). “We have a unique opportunity to deliver new solutions, and I’m committed to ensuring we approach this mission with urgency and purpose.”

Governor JB Pritzker recently appointed Mickensy L. Ellis-White, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, and Mark Boyle, an Army veteran and Chicago executive, to join the council. The Breakthrough Therapies for Veteran Suicide Prevention Program Advisory Council, established in the Department of Healthcare and Family Services in 2023, was created to find innovative therapies and improve mental health resources for veterans facing challenges related to their service. When all members are in place, the council will aim to drive initiatives that improve access to support and address the root causes of veteran suicide.

“Our veterans should be recognized for their dedicated service and sacrifice, and they deserve our commitment to their well-being,” said Porfirio. “I look forward to meeting with the council as soon as possible and advancing solutions to support our veterans, as they are needed now more than ever.”
